The team is based in three centres of research excellence at City St George's: the Centre for Human-Computer Interaction Design (HCID), the giCentre and the Centre for Language and Communication Science Research (LCS). Project partners Say Aphasia, RADLD and the Stroke Association bring expertise in support, awareness raising and research for people with communication impairments.

Research Team

Prof. Stephanie Wilson

Stephanie is the Principal Investigator for the Dara project. She is Professor of Human-Computer Interaction and Co-Director of the Centre for HCI Design (HCID), a specialist research centre in the Department of Computer Science at City St George's. Stephanie's research is rooted in a deep commitment to designing for better futures and this is reflected in the ethos of HCID.

Prof. Jo Wood

Jo is Professor of Visual Analytics at the giCentre, where he designs, builds and applies data visualization software to analyse patterns in complex datasets. He has particular interests in narrative of visual analytic design, computational thinking in pedagogy and novel visualization design for geographic data.

Prof. Nicola Botting

Nikki is Professor of Developmental Disorders. She trained as a psychologist completing a PhD in Child Health (Liverpool). Her research interests include the long-term outcomes of people who have grown up with different or atypical language pathways. She has particular expertise around people with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).

Prof. Madeleine Cruice

Madeline is a Professor of Aphasia Rehabilitation and Recovery at City St George's, and a speech and language therapist by clinical background. Her research interests include developing meaningful treatments that achieve positive outcomes for people with aphasia and family members, and working collaboratively with people with lived experience and service providers to ensure treatments and services meet people's and organisations' needs.

Dr. Niamh Devane

Niamh is a speech and language therapist and post-doctoral research fellow specialising in aphasia. She has worked across the NHS stroke pathway, moving to clinical research in 2012. She has worked on many collaborative projects between the School of Science and Technology and the School of Health and Medical Sciences harnessing emerging technologies to improve healthcare and rehabilitation.

Ulfa Octaviani

Ulfa is a researcher in Human-Computer Interaction. She is interested in the interaction between technology and users. She has been working both in academia and industrial setting.

Dr. Abi Roper

Dr. Abi Roper is a Research Fellow at City St George's, University of London. She is a speech and language therapist and researcher passionate about technology access within speech & language therapy and communication.
